Quintin T. Hardtner III of Shreveport, a speaker at this morning's session. (Town Talk Photo) Episcopal Chu Churchwomen Meeting By Helen Derr Town Talk Religion Editor More than 200 members of Episcopal Churchwomen from throughout the Diocese of are holding their 90th convention in the facilities of St. James' Episcopal Church here. The meeting, which began with lunch Friday, will close at noon today following the holy eucharist and installation of new officers.

Named to office for the next two years and to be installed this morning are Mrs. Elridge Dugas Jr. of Slidell, president; Mrs. Kenneth Paul of Shreveport, vice president and Mrs. Sheldon Morgan of Slidell, corresponding secretary.

Continuing in office for another year are Mrs. Gustave Kraus of New Orleans, teasurer; Mrs. Carl Walters of Sulphur, United Thank Offering custodian, and Mrs. Jack K. Nelson of Baton Rouge, recording secretary.

Mrs. James C. Sewell of Winnfield spoke to the convention Friday afternoon on "Motivation" and Mrs. Quintin T. Hardtner III of Shreveport this morning on "The 'Spiritual Aspect of Motivation." "It's amazing what people can do if they can't get out of it," Mrs.

Sewell, a former member Bishop and Council, told fellow Episcopalians. She reminded women that the purposes of Episcopal Churchwomen are to deepen the spiritual life of church women in the diocese, to carry out the Lord's "Great Commission," and to carry on the heritage from the past. The Louisiana Branch of the Epiciopal Women's Missionary Society was begun in New Orleans in 1886, Mrs. Sewell recalled by Mrs. Tobias Richardson, a woman who had "character, vision and ability," and "we can't let this heritage be lost." Every woman needs self-fulfillment, said the speaker, noting that this can be found best in jobs relating to the church.

"How do we do this?" she asked, answering her own quesation, volunteering for jobs and by saying 'yes' when asked even though it may mean risking defeat." Mrs. Sewell reminded her listeners there are jobs women can do in every parish from cleaning to the priesthood. Workshops and discussion groups on a variety of topics took up the remainder of the afternoon. Following dinner, a film entitled "Roadsigns on a Merry-go-round" was shown and a discussion conducted by Rev. James F.

After an informal dinner at No. 10 Downing Street, Callaghan's home and office, Carter appeared in an ebullient mood and confident the get had been a success.

"There seemed to be -few differences among us," Carter said. "We are determined to address extremely controversial issues like nuclear nonproliferation, the control of the sale of conventional weapons and how to deal with less developed countries and to discuss our viewpoints on the international monetary and financial Carter and Callaghan were joined at dinner by the heads of government of Japan, Italy, West Germany and Canada. Of the summit participants, only French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing was absent. "I see great confidence among the leaders about the future of democratic society a very common assessment of the need to cooperate with one another," Carter said at Winfield House, the U.S. Embassy residence where he is staying while in London.

Carter said the leaders had agreed "to make this conference not just to produce a communique but to She's Tops When It Comes To Losing Pounds Sensibly Mary Ducote of Alexandria has lost 112 pounds and new title. What's more, her family thinks she's tops. Mrs. Ducote has been named first runner-up to the Louisiana TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Queen. The queen represents the TOPS member statewide who has recorded the biggest weight loss in a year.

Mrs. Ducote is a member of local Chapter 199 of TOPS, a national organization which encourages members to diet sensibly under doctors' recommendations. When she joined TOPS she weighed 272 pounds. She says she had "tried everything from fad diets to diet pills" to lose weight ever since she was a size 16 eighth-grader. But nothing had worked.

After joining TOPS, it took her a and two weeks to reach the 160- year pound goal she and her doctor had set. She says she did it by cutting out starches such as rice and breads and reducing the amount of other foods she eats. "I I didn't really change my diet all that much," she said. The editors said "veiled racism" had to be considered as one of the factors in long sentences, since "the majority are blacks confined for crimes against They also concluded that the longtermers get "little or no assistance toward helping them to get out." Families are for the most part "poor, socially and politicaly insignificant people at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder."
